Sortie! is a free daily trivia game where your answers power a paper plane. Each question gives you a category and a scoring condition: choosing a valid answer is only part of the task; choosing one that best fits the condition earns more points. Play the official game at dailysortie.com, or start in Fly The Archive to learn the format before your daily attempt.
How do you play Sortie!?
A Classic Archive run has six questions. Here is the sequence we tested:
- Choose Fly The Archive, select Classic, and press Go!
- Read both parts of the question during the short opening countdown: what you must name, and what earns a higher score.
- When the answer box opens, type your answer and press Submit before the timer expires.
- Watch the flight and updated score, then apply the next question's scoring condition.
- Continue through all six questions to reach the result screen.
In our desktop browser session, each question began with roughly five seconds of reading time before a timed answer window. You can think during that preview, even though you cannot type yet. The menu also offered a Sportie archive option; our test covered Classic.
How does Sortie! scoring work?
The category determines what you can answer; the scoring condition determines which answer is worth choosing. A question about countries might reward population, while another prompt might reward the Scrabble value of a name. Familiarity alone does not tell you which choice will score well.
Our archive run included geography, U.S. history and spelling-based scoring. The useful distinction was between knowing an eligible answer and comparing eligible answers along the requested measure.
The Flight Debrief also lets you expand an answer bank. In the bank we checked, answers were grouped into Mach, Burner, Cruise, Climb and Float tiers. The underlying measure and the flight points are different: our first answer had a displayed Scrabble value of 17 but added 125 to the run. A question we left unanswered timed out and appeared as Stall, 0.
For example, a longer name is not automatically better when letter values matter. Likewise, the largest state by area is not necessarily the right choice if the question measures coastline. Read the measure literally before deciding.
How can you improve your Sortie! score?
Identify the category, measure and direction
Before typing, reduce the question to three checks: What kind of answer is allowed? What is being measured? Does more or less help? This keeps you from answering the topic correctly while overlooking the scoring rule.
Compare a short list, then commit
Think of two or three eligible answers and compare them against the stated condition. Avoid spending the entire countdown searching for a perfect answer you cannot confidently name or spell. The answer window is timed, so prepare a fallback while considering stronger candidates.
Review the answer bank after practising
Expand the answers in Flight Debrief to compare your choice with the listed alternatives. Look for why one belongs in a higher tier. This gives your next practice run a specific focus instead of relying on trial and error.
What is the difference between Daily Mission and Fly The Archive?
The official site describes Daily Mission as one official flight per day. Fly The Archive provides practice with past mission questions. Start there if you want to understand the controls before attempting the daily challenge.
Signing in supports a callsign, official score posting, leaderboard participation and a Pilot Logbook. We played Classic Archive without signing in. We did not test account creation or submit a leaderboard score.
Is Sortie! worth adding to your daily games?
It suits players who enjoy general knowledge but want to make a decision beyond recalling a correct fact. A familiar category can still be challenging when the scoring measure changes. The paper plane makes each submission easy to follow, while the timer keeps the decisions moving.
Players who prefer unlimited thinking time may find that timer less appealing. Try Classic Archive first: it shows whether you enjoy comparing answers under time pressure before you make Sortie! a daily habit.
Tested in a desktop browser on October 24, 2026: one Classic Archive run, five submitted answers and one timeout, ending at 625 points. Daily Mission scoring, Sportie and signed-in features were not independently tested.
