Every wrong guess in Metazooa still tells you something: it shows where that animal branches away from the day's mystery animal on the tree of life. There is one mystery animal a day, 20 guesses to find it, and a tree that grows with each guess until the "???" box is filled.
Reading the tree after each guess
Type a species and the game places it on a branching tree that starts at Metazoa, the animal kingdom. It then reveals the deepest group your guess shares with the answer, labelled "The answer and dog have this in common." Each rank comes with a short Wikipedia description and pictures, which helps when a name like Amniota or Neognathae appears for the first time.
The autocomplete only accepts species in the game's own list. "house sparrow" was not accepted, while "sparrow" was, and names like "flycatcher", "lyrebird" and "pitta" returned "not found in database". A rejected name costs no guess, so it is worth trying the plain common name when a specific one fails.
Our six-guess solve of Animal #1185
We played the daily on 28 October 2026, logged out, without hints. Spoiler-safe version of the route:
| Guess | New shared rank | What it told us |
|---|---|---|
| dog | Amniota (clade) | Not a mammal: reptile or bird |
| chicken | Neognathae (infraclass) | A bird, but not a fowl |
| pigeon | Neoaves (clade) | Not a pigeon relative either |
| sparrow | Passeriformes (order) | A perching bird |
| crow | still Passeriformes | No closer inside the order |
| final guess | Species | Solved with 14 guesses left |
Afterwards, Show table summarised the run as ranks found, guesses spent on each (Passeriformes took two) and hints used (none). The win pop-up lists plays, wins, current and max streak, and offers Share, New Practice and a link to the plant version, Metaflora.
The useful lesson was the dog guess. One familiar mammal ruled out every mammal at once, and the chicken did the same for fowl. Broad, familiar animals early are what make the later guesses cheap.
Splitting the tree on purpose
- Start far apart. A mammal, then a bird or an insect, tells you which big branch to search.
- Halve the branch. Once you know the branch, pick animals from different sub-groups inside it.
- Prefer familiar animals. The Metazooa FAQ says animals were chosen for how familiar they are to people, as well as breadth, so obscure species are rarely the answer and often not in the list at all.
- Hold the hint. After the first guess a Hint button appears: "Exchange 3 guesses to reveal a rank!" With 20 guesses that is a real cost, so keep it for when a branch truly stalls.
Why the tree can disagree with your textbook
Metazooa follows the NCBI taxonomy, not Wikipedia's. There is no Reptilia class: reptiles and birds sit together under Sauropsida, and the FAQ notes that crocodiles are more closely related to birds than to lizards. If a guess lands somewhere surprising, the classification system is usually the reason, not a bug.
The designer behind Globle and Metazooa
Metazooa is part of Trainwreck Labs, a one-person studio run by game designer Abe Train, who also made Globle. In a 2025 interview with Gaming Trend, he says the "game" part comes first and the education second, because players will not learn anything if they stop playing. The same interview describes Metazooa: Live, a park event at Toronto Games Week where players photographed plants and animals to build a similar tree.
